Counter-Terrorism Committee holds open meeting on the countering of terrorist narratives

On 19 October 2023, the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) held an open meeting on “Countering terrorist narratives and preventing the use of the Internet for terrorist purposes.” Organized in accordance with Security Council resolution 2354 (2017), the open meeting reviewed global developments in countering terrorist narratives, and it identified good practices and recommended ways for Member States to enhance their efforts in this space.

CTC special meeting 2022

The special meeting of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee on “Countering the use of new and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes” will be held in India on 28-29 October 2022. The theme focuses on three areas where emerging technologies are experiencing rapid development and increasing threat of abuse for terrorist purposes: terrorism financing; unmanned aerial systems (UAS); and the Internet and social media. Civil society perspectives: ISIL in Africa - Key trends and developments

A growing number of ISIL-affiliated groups in Africa have shown an ability to launch deadly and coordinated attacks, capture strategic territories, recruit followers using anti-Government propaganda, and conscript child soldiers. With the exception of attacks carried out by the Islamic State — Sinai Province and the Islamic State in Somalia (ISS), the frequency of ISIL attacks and the resulting casualties across the continent indicate that African States are facing an unprecedented terrorist threat.
