At COP14,
Parties agreed that the process to develop the post-2020 global biodiversity framework would be gender-responsive, by systematically integrating a gender perspective and ensuring appropriate representation, particularly of women and girls, in the process.
Expert Workshop on Gender Considerations in the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework
In partnership with UN Women, the CBD Secretariat co-organized an
expert workshop to develop recommendations for possible gender elements in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, bringing together gender and environment experts and Party representatives from all over the world for two intensive days of discussion (11-12 April 2019) in New York City, USA.
Advice to Enable a Gender-responsive process for the development of the post-2020 biodiversity framework
In
decision 14/34 Parties, the Secretariat and other relevant organizations were urged to consider
advice and
guidance on a gender-responsive approach to their processes on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. The advice note contains key messages on gender equality and biodiversity linkages, guiding principles to inform and provide a foundation for a gender-responsive approach, and recommended actions to address three key areas: a) ensuring an inclusive and representative process; b) promoting outreach and awareness-raising; and c) generating and disseminating reliable evidence on gender equality and biodiversity linkages.
What's New - Building Capacity to Mainstream Gender
Open Online Course on Gender and the Environment
This new massive open online module course on gender and environment was developed by the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme, Global Environment Facility, UNITAR and over 40 other international organizations. Together with these partners the CBD Secretariat helped produce a module on gender and biodiversity. This free module focuses on the links between gender and biodiversity and presents relevant international commitments, as well as actions at the national and local level, highlighting how gender equality can contribute to biodiversity conservation.

Capacity building Workshop on Gender Mainstreaming for Convention Delegates
In partnership with UN Women, the CBD Secretariat co-organized a capacity building workshop on gender mainstreaming to strengthen the awareness and capacity of Convention delegates to integrate a gender perspective in the intergovernmental deliberations and the implementation of the Convention, the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and NBSAPs (1 July 2018).
Regional Capacity Building on Gender and Biodiversity
The CBD Secretariat hosted a
workshop in Bangkok, Thailand from 28-30 November, 2017, bringing together gender and environment specialists with biodiversity experts from across the South East Asia and Pacific regions, to identify training needs and approaches to address gender issues relevant for biodiversity in the regions.

Gender-Responsive NBSAPs Pilot Project
Through the Japan Biodiversity Fund, the CBD Secretariat, in collaboration with IUCN’s Global Gender Office, implemented a pilot project to support the development of gender-responsive national biodiversity strategies in developing countries. Women’s group representatives and government officials came together in Mexico, Uganda and Brazil to identify and incorporate gender-responsive approaches in their revised NBSAPs.
