Statement by Amy Fraenkel, CMS Executive Secretary to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity 2023

International Day for Biological Diversity 2023 will be celebrated under the theme: “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity”.

“From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity” is this year’s theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity.  The theme reminds us of the incredible achievement this past December, when the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework – the GBF - was adopted.  At the same time, the theme underlines the need for countries to move quickly to take the actions necessary to achieve the GBF's ambitious goals and targets.

World Water Day, celebrated on March 22, is an ideal moment to contemplate the importance of water to migratory birds. Migratory birds rely on water and its associated habitats - lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, all inland and coastal wetlands - for migration, wintering, and breeding. Unfortunately, increasing human demand for water as well as pollution and climate change threaten these precious aquatic ecosystems and the migratory birds that depend on them.

World Wildlife Day 2023 – Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation - Statement by Amy Fraenkel

World Wildlife Day 2023 will be celebrated on 3 March 2023 under the theme "Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation".

This year’s World Wildlife Day highlights Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation,  which greatly resonates with the work of CMS – the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species.  Addressing the many challenges  for wildlife conservation is only possible through   the dedicated efforts of  many different  actors, including governments, scientists, conservation groups, , indigenous peoples and local communities, the private sector and other international entities.

I am delighted to welcome you all to Bonn for this 4th Meeting of Signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks. I’d like to give a special welcome to the Ambassador of Cote d’Ivoire. Bienvenue. The UN Campus in Bonn is the home of the Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species and many of its specialized agreements and MOUs, including the Sharks MOU.

Statement of Amy Fraenkel, Executive Secretary of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals on the International Day for Biological Diversity 2022

The International Day for Biological Diversity is being celebrated worldwide on 22 May 2022 and under the theme “Building a shared future for all life”.

“Building a shared future for all life” is this year’s theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) which will be celebrated around the world on 22 May. The theme captures the spirit behind ongoing efforts to come up with a shared plan – a Global Biodiversity Framework – which will set the global conservation agenda for the next decade.
