image size guidance & suggestions

droll.1967 says:

I'm a fairly new member (Pro) and could use some common sense guidance about photo sizes. I've read the limitations, but just because I CAN upload a huge (in both pixels and KB or MB) file, that doesn't mean I should.

So I'm asking those of you with more Flickr experience to explain the maximum size of photos you upload, and why that maximum size.

Also, is it true that groups may set a different maximize pixel size? I have been trying to submit photos in the Catchy Colors group but they keep being rejected with a vague explanation about not adhering to that group's rules. I believe all of the photos I tried to put in the group follow the stated rules. So I am wondering if there is some image size limit in place.

Thank you in advance for your help.

All of the photos in your photostream appear to have their safety level set to "Moderate". Many groups on Flickr do not allow photos that are flagged as "Moderate". As long as your photos are safe according to the Flickr Community Guidelines, you should set the safety flags that way.

I see no reason not to upload my photos in full size.
There are groups requiring a minimum size, but I haver never seen anyone complaining over photos being available in big sizes. And why should they?

I think Flickr's recommended display size is 2k, or generally about 2048 x 1080.

Lately, I've been restricting the maximum dimension of images I upload to Flickr to 1920 pixels.

I see no purpose in routinely uploading images larger than that, although today's camera's, 3D software and other applications can certainly generate very large images indeed.

The big concern is preventing or at least discouraging online image theft. Uploading very large versions of photographs makes it too easy for image thieves to grab and run with our work, possibly even making prints to sell at kiosks, street fairs and other such venues where no one would be likely to notice or recognize your work or mine.

The so-called Pixel Peepers enjoy zooming in to view digital images in high resolution to judge whether or not your pixels are perfect, so for that crowd, bigger images are better.

Those with a very large display and a high-end graphics card will enjoy seeing images at higher resolution than 2048, but for the time being, at least, I see little purpose in uploading the very large image sizes, other than to have a cloud back-up, but that comes with a risk, so I spend my time filling up hard drives with my images, and hoping they won't fail.

I upload full size but limit viewing sizes to 2048, though I enjoy viewing photos of those who upload up to 6K or so, as long as they are high enough quality. Sometimes I see large uploads that are just a blur at the higher sizes.

A week or two ago I got a communication from Flickr that my account has been declared "SAFE", I assume a SAFE account is one that is suitable for all viewers.

I am barred from joining the Catchy Colors group, with a notation about Moderate instead of Safe mode.

When I send a link to others, when they click on the link no photo appears - just some text about Adult Content. That was quite embarrassing when I sent a link to my daughter to test the link.

The 26 photos I have uploaded are of birds, flowers, scapes, motorcycles.

What is ADULT CONTENT about these?

You have to ask that yourself, because they are flagged as moderate and the account holder (= you) is in control of the safety flagging. That is to say: only if the account is declared safe. But yours is. A safe account doesn't mean there are no adult photos in the account, it means the account holder is trusted to flag the safety level of each photo according to the content.

Simple solution: change the flag on those photos to safe.

They are not really of any relevance for Flickr. Just upload in best possible quality you have, so you always have a backup of your photos in best possible quality. Your subscription (Pro vs non-Pro) and settings decides which display-sizes are made and used for your photos. When your photopages are shown, Flickr uses the display-size that best fits the situation.

If you f.ex. upload an "8k" photo today Flickr will make display-sizes up to "2k"⭐ because you don't have a Pro-subscription. If you get a Pro-subscription later, Flickr will add display-sizes up to "6k"⭐. And if Flickr later adds "8k" display-sizes, that will probably automatically be added for your existing photos too (if the original uploads are big enough)⭐.

⭐ Unless you have choosen a lower resolution as max display size in settings.
